The Atlanta Preservation Center has selected Brunning & Stang to continue the preservation work on the 1856 antebellum Lemuel P. Grant Mansion located in the Grant Park Historic District. The mansion was purchased in 2001 by the Preservation Center and is considered to be Atlanta's most significant and endangered house. It is one of only two houses built in the 1850's that still stands within the Atlanta city limits.
The three-story, Italianate mansion was built by Grant, a city pioneer, railroad magnate, and philanthropist who donated 100 acres to the city for Grant Park. Surviving the Civil War, the house was the birthplace of golf legend Bobby Jones and was at one time a passion of Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone with the Wind who filed a lawsuit to protect it.
Phase I of the restoration began in 2005 and included stabilization of the east and west wings exterior walls and creating a temporary covering for the walls which had no roof for decades. Brunning & Stang will be working to complete Phase I which includes installing the temporary roof and flooring for the exposed spaces in the east and west wings of the house.
Phase II of the restoration will be much more extensive and expensive. The capital campaign for Phase II will begin this year.

Both Geoff Brunning and Ray Stang are frustrated sailors who rarely, if ever, get the chance to sail. They are both interested in naval history and their company logo reflects that interest. The flags in the Brunning & Stang company logo are the two International code Flags "B" and "S". Code flags are used at sea for signaling between ships. Each of the 39 flags has an official and pre-assigned meaning and use. Code Flag "B" means: "I have explosives on board" and Code Flag "S" means: "I am full speed astern". The meanings appealed to Ray and Geoff's slightly off-beat humor! All of that being said, these code flags have been in use unchanged since 1855 and, in a sense, represent tradition and permanence...two traits considered significant, and reflective of the attitude toward home building espoused by the team at Brunning & Stang.
